Christmas Music

I’m absolutely so finished with the “sounds of Christmas.” I usually don’t have a problem with a few weeks of those recognizable tunes each year. But, every year the Targ-Marts of the world start blasting them earlier and earlier. I actually heard Silver Bells being played the day after Halloween this year.                                                                                                                                           Then I overdosed on Christmas Day. We had a house-full of folks and I lazily turned on the DirecTV in the den and put on the “Holiday Music” channel and let it play for about 8 hours while we were in the dining, living and kitchen rooms. Unfortunately the den also contains the wet-bar and adult beverages so I made at least a dozen trips into the midst of sleigh bell sounds and harmonizing choirs. My wife also made trips into the den for beverages and sodas. We compared notes later. Around 5pm, for the third time, I heard Gene Autry singing Rudolph. My wife heard three Bing Crosby White Christmas renditions. Evidently DirecTV has a short rotating play list. I’m officially on a blackout of Christmas music for 11 months and two weeks.

I thought about the “chart” tunes that were popular on Christmas day over the years. With a little bit of googling and research I’m leaving you a list of #1 hits every Christmas Day since 1955. I chose that start date because that’s about the time it started mattering to me. I wondered with all the Christmas songs recorded over the years, were any of them the #1 song on Christmas Day? Actually only TWO songs about Christmas ever led the charts on Christmas Day. In 1948, Spike Jones and His City Slickers were #1 with “All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth.” The other top hit happened ten years later as listed below.

See how many you remember and go ahead and sing or hum the melodies.

One Response to Christmas Music

  1. fiddlrts says:

My rule: No Christmas music in my house until after Thanksgiving. Except for the following:
    1. Practice whatever you need to.
    2. I generally like Messiah or Vivaldi’s Gloria or one of the various Magnificats whenever.
    3. Children are allowed to put on tutus and dance to Nutcracker throughout the year.
    Also note:
“Christmas Shoes” may only be played when proof of flying pigs is presented. And not even then.
