One Musical Opinion

I’m flying down the “99” yesterday listening to a female singer that sounds like Ella Fitzgerald blended with Diana Krall. She swings, she scats and her vocal chops sound like she’s been singing in Jazz clubs for years.

I found out her name is Stephanie Joanne Angelina Germanotta. You won’t find any albums with that name on them.
You might know her as LADY GAGA.

She says in an interview she’s been surrounded by “noise” for years and she was close to having a mental breakdown. She just couldn’t do it anymore. Then the incredible Tony Bennett invited her to do an album with him.

If you like great singing, get this album. That Lady has chops.

I gave a copy to my wife who had to make a trip to SoCal to a conference last weekend. She said she played the album at least seven times and loved it more each time. Same here.

On this day, October 1st, in 1962, the Today show started a brand new host. His name was Johnny Carson. He was 36 years old. His first guest was 36 years old too.
His first guest was Tony Bennett.Tony Bennett
There were others on the first show: Groucho Marx, Joan Crawford, Mel Brooks and Rudy Vallee. But Tony stole the show.

Tony had just made his Carnegie Hall debut the same week in 1962 and he sang his hit song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco.”

So we fast forward to this past week, and Tony has released his latest great album “Cheek to Cheek” with Lady Gaga.

Tony is 88 years old and still sounds great. I already gave my opinion of the Lady.

She’s 28 and sounds even greater.

If you’re a fan of swinging jazz music, do yourself a favor and buy, download or steal this album.

  1. We got to see Tony Bennett when he appeared at the Fox Theater a few years ago. I grew up in the age of rock and roll, but there is nothing like the Great American Songbook. So glad that there are still singers coming along who know how to SING!
