Your Money Your Choice

So I have a box of 100 conversation starters. Most people love a good conversation, but to have one there must be a good question to start the flow. These 100 questions I have are fantastic. Each one makes my brain churn. I will be using these ‘conversation starters’ with a monthly meeting group.

I thought I would throw one of these questions up here to see if anyone wants to post  their answer. I doubt if we get much of a conversation going because Who’s got time for this nonsense? But we may have a myriad of opinions.

Before I ask you the question I did some research to help with background. A few more facts always helps before an opinion is given.
So…the question.
question mark

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gives money every year to many worthy causes. You have been given the entire amount of Foundation money to spend. You may only spend it on one cause of your choice. What will it be?

Here’s the background research I did:  The Gates Foundation has about $40 Billion dollars today. Every year they give approximately $4 Billion to many causes. Over the years they have given over $39 Billion dollars away.

But, remember, you are going to spend the entire $40 billion on your ONE cause/problem/charity.  How will you spend it?

    Education, job support for the disabled so that they can work and have the joy of being productive.

      I have no idea if I can write as long as response as I want. I may be cut off.
      Here goes: Your idea to send 40 Billion to educate the disabled would be stunning: Here’s why…the programs below, which require thousands of people to administer have only a small segment of the total for education and job training, as you can see.
      The total amount of money to do everything listed below is less than 15 Billion.
      I imagine a large segment of your education/training program would turn many disabled from dependent to independent.
      • Help state and county agencies plan for eligible recipients under the Medicare, Medicaid, and Supplemental Security Income programs;
      • Distribute funds and develop programs for people with disabilities and the elderly under the Rehabilitation Act;
      • Distribute funds for housing for people with disabilities under the Housing and Urban Development Act;
      • Allocate funds to states and local areas for employment and job training programs for veterans under the Job Training Partnership Act, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program;
      • Ensure that comparable public transportation services are available for all segments of the population under the Americans with Disabilities Act;
      • Award federal grants, under the Older Americans Act, based on the number of elderly people with physical and mental disabilities;
      • Allocate funds for mass transit systems to provide facilities for people with disabilities under the Federal Transit Act;
      • Provide housing assistance and supportive services for low-income individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families under the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program; and
      • Make available special education for children ages 3 through 5 through Special Education Preschool Grants.

    The Veterans are near and dear to my heart as being an active volunteer with the American Legion and I think they deserve each and every opportunity presented to them to be self sufficient. 40B would go a long way to help those so deserving.
